SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OFApril 25th, 2001
FiledApril 25th, 2001Fusion power stations would provide large amounts of base load electric energy, burning deuterium-tritium fuel. An intrinsic characteristic of them, would be the extremely low level of fuel inventory in the burning chamber, and the low levels of after burn heat power density. Obviously, fusion power stations would neither burn nor produce any fissile material. The products of the fusion process itself are benign, so that tritium and the neutron activation of materials would be the only source of potential radiological hazards. With appropriate design, these favourable inherent features can be exploited to provide substantial safety and environmental advantages.
