The success of global immunization worldwide can be attributed to a large extent to having established sufficiently resilient in-country immunization supply chain and vaccine management systems, to ensure adequate and uninterrupted availability of quality vaccines at service delivery levels so that opportunities to vaccinate are not missed because vaccines and injection supplies are unavailable. Unfortunately, today there is mounting and undeniable evidence that in-country immunization supply chains are strained, performing sub-optimally, are under-resourced, and continue to rely on unsustainable coping mechanisms to address persistent challenges in the storage, distribution, handling, management and stock control of vaccines and supplies.
