The continuous variables reflecting pro-oxidant (unsaturated fat and iron) and antioxidant exposures (vitamin C, lycopene, α-carotene, β-carotene, lutein, β-cryptoxanthin, α-tocopherol, and selenium) will be divided into low, medium, and high categories based on each exposure’s tertile values and points will be given according to tertile categorization. For anti-oxidants the first through third tertiles will be assigned 0 through 2 points, respectively, whereas the corresponding point assignment for pro-oxidants will be carried out in reverse (0 points for the highest tertile and 2 points for the lowest tertile). A similar scoring approach will be used for pro- and anti-oxidant categorical variables (selenium supplements, smoking, alcohol and use of aspirin and NSAIDs).
