Agreement ends weeks ofDecember 8th, 2011
As you all know, last Wednesday evening Congress reached an agreement that both ended the lapse in funding (the “government shutdown”) and raised the debt ceiling. This was very good news and brought to closure a very stressful period. We at PPPL were relatively fortunate during this time of great uncer- tainty – we were able to remain open and to advance our mission, while cutting back on expenditures. It is most unfortunate, and we are saddened, that our colleagues at many federal agencies and other laboratories suffered closure and furloughs. The budget agreement extends to January 15 and the debt ceiling agreement to February 7. Let us hope that, before those new deadlines, Con- gress reaches agreements and we do not have to relive another deadline crisis.
