This agreement was signed on 30 October 1947 by 23 countries. It came into force on January 1, 1948. It was intended to boost the economic recovery after the disastrous World War 2 through liberalizing and reconstructing global trade. GATT was replaced by the WTO (World Trade Organisation) in 1995. The topic of GATT is important from the perspective of the UPSC IAS Examination and it falls under the General Studies Paper 2 and particularly in the International Relations Section.
