FiledJuly 9th, 2014Since the collapse of the Soviet Union in December 1991, a subset of the 15 newly independent states that replaced the vast Communist country have formed a region around Russia, while others have broken off to join Europe (the three Baltic Sea states: Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania) and others have connected with one or more other regions, depending on time and issue area.
