The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) sought to increase trade among these two partners, broadening the enterprise embodied in the Canada-United States Free Trade Agreement (CUSFTA) into a trilateral partnership, lowering trade barriers among Canada, the United States and Mexico.
