Management and trade union representatives agreed to enter a facilitated process, under the independent chair of Ms Janet Hughes, for the purpose of ensuring the orderly transfer of cancer surgery and some associated services to the eight specialist cancer centres. The facilitated process resulted in a considerable degree of agreement on the terms of a national framework within which national and local level discussions will take place. These discussions took place against the background of a shared commitment to an orderly transfer of services in line with the National Cancer Strategies to support the delivery of optimum Cancer Services in the HSE. It is also recognised that the re-alignment of cancer services will involve considerable disruption to some staff, while at the same time requiring their assistance and expert support to achieve the objectives of the National Strategy including the timelines identified in that Strategy.
