Species action and management planning under AEWA is a dynamic process. Much experience has been gained by the AEWA governing bodies, the range states and various other stakeholders involved during the 20 years lifespan of the Agreement. As species action and management planning under AEWA continues to develop, so does the continued need for clear criteria and guidance to steer the various stages of the planning and implementation process.

This document considers AEWA’s potential contribution to the ‘Post 2020 Global Biodiversity Framework’. The Framework will be of significant political importance, providing a major opportunity to ‘reset’ international responses to the biodiversity crisis and significantly raise ambitions in addressing it. It is timely that AEWA take the opportunity to respond to it, not least in drawing direct linkages between likely themes and targets within the Framework, and AEWA’s own Strategic Plan 2019-2027 adopted at MOP7.

This report is based on the assessment framework built into the Strategic Plan and follows an approach that employs a measure of distance to target values for the purpose-level indicators and a scoring system for the target-level indicators. Scores were placed between brackets to indicate when they are based on incomplete quality and/or scope of the assessment or a partially missing assessment, and between square brackets to indicate that it is tentative since additional time-bound indicators will be included at a later stage of the implementation of the Strategic Plan.

The four causes identified in the Strategic Plan are energy infrastructure (especially powerlines, wind turbines); illegal taking & killing; fisheries bycatch; and invasive alien species.

Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds • December 16th, 2015

The impact of increasing migratory and sedentary goose populations in Europe on economic activities and natural ecosystems continues to grow, becoming increasingly acute in many countries. Additionally, populations of some huntable migratory species are in decline and require coordinated international measures to restore their favourable conservation status. To tackle these urgent issues and move towards the long-term sustainable use of all huntable migratory waterbirds in Europe, it is proposed to establish an over-arching framework for goose management – a European Multi-species Goose Management Platform

The various effects of the COVID-19 have resulted in a number of restrictions impacting, among others, travel and the organisation of in-person meetings worldwide. As a result, in the period between May 2020 and March 2021, meetings of the intergovernmental bodies of UNEP and its associated Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs), have been conducted virtually. Some meetings were shortened and took place with a more limited agenda, while others took place at a later date than originally scheduled. The UNEA5 meeting, for example, was split into two parts: the first one took place in a virtual format in February 2021, and the second one is scheduled for 2022 and will hopefully be held in-person. All in all, the majority of meetings that had been scheduled for 2020 and early 2021 took place and only a limited number of meetings were postponed.
