This Agreement shall be for the purpose of NASA GRC and Honeywell to conduct combustion research in support of the Federal Aviation Administration's ("FAA") Continuous Lower Energy, Emissions, and Noise ("CLEEN") CLEEN-II Activities. The test will be conducted on a full annular combustion test article provided by Honeywell. The primary objective of the test is to evaluate combustor performance with interest on emissions and particulate analyses. Honeywell's CLEEN II program is maturing advanced turbine and combustor technologies to reduce weight for improved fuel burn and reduced emissions. The Honeywell advanced combustor design is a Compact Low Emissions Combustor that integrates advanced aerodynamics and fuel injection technologies to reduce engine NOx emissions and weight (contributing to reducing fuel burn). The test will take place in NASA GRC's Advanced Subsonic Combustion Rig ("ASCR").

Aircraft contrails are currently estimated as the largest impact of commercial aviation on climate warming and improved understanding of contrail formation contributes to NASA's mission to develop sustainable aviation technologies. The EMIRS thermal infrared spectrometer is among the three science instruments on-board EMM. The prime contractor in the United States for EMM science operations and activities is the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP) at the University of Colorado. LASP has contracted with Arizona State University (ASU) to provide science and operations support for the EMIRS instrument, and ASU has in turn requested help from NASA to provide scientific support. ASU has requested NASA’s participation based on NASA GSFC’s expertise in atmospheric infrared analysis and radiative transfer modeling of planetary atmospheres, combined with more than 30 years of experience in the development and use of algorithms for the retrieval of atmospheric parameters from spacecraft observations of Mars.
