RATER AGREEMENT AND DISAGREEMENT
Research Article • April 25th, 2022

This study combines language assessment processes and interlanguage analysis techniques to determine rater agreement and disagreement in assessing English article acquisition. Employing native English speaking and non-native English speaking raters, picture sequence narratives that were written by English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners (n=97) were coded and scored for suppliance- in-obligatory context (SOC) and target-like utterance (TLU). Although the kappa statistic revealed a fair agreement between raters (0.17 – 0.33), content analysis methods revealed much higher agreement (88.29% - 94.07%). Furthermore, language background effects between the raters could not be substantiated however the results demonstrated a discernable disagreement pattern between them. Thus, the study recommends the inclusion of a foreign language teaching background as a factor for rater selection to minimize language background effects on rating language assessments.

Agreement and understanding about honesty and deception rules in romantic relationships
Research Article • February 10th, 2014

This research describes perceived rules pertaining to honesty in romantic relationships, identifies sources of accuracy and bias affecting consensus on rules, and clarifies impli- cations for couple conflict. Couples typically idealize honesty; yet, situational rules are vulnerable to different interpretations due to ambiguous properties of deception and pressures to balance openness with discretion. The research distinguishes obligatory rules, which prescribe disclosure or proscribe deception, and discretionary rules, which grant flexibility. Couples agreed on obligatory rules more than discretionary rules, although females endorsed obligatory rules more than males. Individuals overestimated agreement, overattributed sex-stereotypic rule endorsement to the partner, and showed minimal understanding of expectations unique to the partner. Agreement on obligatory rules was associated with lower conflict, whereas understanding predicted greater conflict.

Agreement in Modern Standard Arabic constructions with cardinal numerals over ten
Research Article • May 9th, 2017

Abstract: In Modern Standard Arabic constructions with cardinal numerals over ten in which the noun denoting the counted object follows the numeral, e.g. al-ḫamsūna ǧundiyyan ‘the fifty soldiers’ (as opposed to al-ǧunūdu l-ḫamsūna ‘idem’), the noun is indefinite singular. When a property of the object counted is to be expressed by means of an attribute: an adjective, participle, or a relative clause, it agrees with the noun in gender, but agreement in the three remaining categories, i.e. number, case and definiteness, may be distributed between the noun and the numeral. The present study analyzes examples of such constructions found in contemporary journalistic texts. Four agreement configurations are distinguished, out of which three were described by Classical Arabic grammarians, while one is non-classical. In some instances, due to the syncretism of declension forms, agreement in case is in- determinate. The analysis of the examples shows that apart from variation in agreement that

An Optimal Equity-Linked Pure Endowment Contract: Optimal Stochastic Control Approach
Research Article • July 28th, 2024

This article studies pure-endowment contracts whose investments are funded simultaneously in risk-free and risky financial markets. Using the optimal stochastic control method and the assumption that the jumps of the risky financial market follow either finite or infinite activity Lévy process, and that the policyholder’s utility function is a CRRA utility function, it derives an optimal investment strategy and optimal policyholder consumption, which depends on the mortality rate. Several mortality models and jump parameters are employed to study the sensitivity of our findings.

Learning to look: The acquisition of eye gaze agreement during the production of ASL verbs∗
Research Article • September 11th, 2009

Motivation for the study of language acquisition is based in part on the assumption that understanding how specific languages are acquired will inform us about general principles that underlie all languages. For example, an important question for both first language acquisition in children and for second language acquisition (SLA) in adults is whether universal aspects of language develop in a different way and on a different time scale from the language-specific details of any one language.

The impact of verb form, sentence position, home language and L2 proficiency on subject-verb agreement in child L2 Dutch
Research Article • April 27th, 2011

It has been argued that children learning a second language (L2) omit agreement inflection due to communication demands (Haznedar, 2001; Haznedar & Schwartz, 1997; Ionin & Wexler, 2002; Prévost, 2003). The conclusion of these studies is that L2 children know the morphological and syntactic properties of agreement inflection, but sometimes insert an inflectional default form (i.e. the bare verb) in production. The present study focuses on factors that explain errors with subject-verb agreement in the speech of children learning Dutch as their L2. Analyses of experimentally obtained production data from four to nine year old L2 children reveal that verb form, sentence position, home language and L2 proficiency determine accuracy with subject- verb agreement in the L2. Most errors were omissions of inflection, in line with the above hypothesis. However, in more exceptional contexts, the children also substituted verb forms, which is more difficult to reconcile with the claim that L2 child

Agreement of Iranian Breast Cancer Data and Relationships with Measuring Quality of Care in a 5-year Period (2006-2011)
Research Article • September 8th, 2010

Objectives: To investigate data agreement of cancer registries and medical records as well as the quality of care and assess their relationship in a 5-year period from 2006 to 2011. Methods: The present cross-sectional, descriptive-analytical study was conducted on 443 cases summarized through census and using a checklist. Data agreement of Nemazi hospital-based cancer registry and the breast cancer prevention center was analyzed according to their corresponding medical records through adjusted and unadjusted Kappa. The process of care quality was also computed and the relationship with data agreement was investigated through chi-square test. Results: Agreement of surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy data between Nemazi hospital-based cancer registry and medical records was 62.9%, 78.5%, and 81%, respectively, while the figures were 93.2%, 87.9%, and 90.8%, respectively, between breast cancer prevention center and medical records. Moreover, quality of mastectomy, lumpectomy, radioth

Agreement between maternal recall of distant first birth events with hospital birth records: A cohort study
Research Article • May 16th, 2022

BACKGROUND Inter and intra-generational birth cohorts could be particularly useful for predicting the likelihood of labour and birth events for nulliparous women. However, maternal recall of their first childbirth may be imprecise, and hospital records can be inaccurate. Establishing the extent of agreement between mothers’ recall and hospital reports of historical first birth events could be the basis of a prediction tool that could contribute to better health care practices during daughter’s perinatal period.

A research on proximate, minerals and anti- nutritive composition of African walnut collected from Nigeria and Cameroon was carried out at the Laboratory of Department of Biochemistry and Technology, Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Nigeria. Experimental design was completely randomized design with five replications. Proximate properties of the two lines did not show any significant difference (P< 0.05) except for carbohydrate. However, the line from Nigeria had higher values in protein (28.32%), crude fat (5.67%), ash (4.33%), and moisture (38,44%) content, while higher values for carbohydrate (20.87%) and crude fibre (9.32%) was obtained for the line from Cameroon. The mineral composition of the two lines showed significant difference (P> 0.05) in some mineral elements like manganese, sodium and chromium. Anti-nutritional composition of the two lines did not show any significant difference like the result on proximate analysis. However, higher values of phytate (6.27%), and
