Plumas Unified School District/Lassen & Plumas National Forests Storrie Fire Restoration Agreement:Restoration Agreement • June 11th, 2016
Contract Type FiledJune 11th, 2016Students from the Plumas Unified School District got a taste of what it takes to be a wildland firefighter. Fire staff from the Plumas National Forest have been team-teaching a Basic-32 fire course to Quincy High Natural Resource and Community School students. The course culminated in a practical field exercise where students used their newly- acquired skills. The most popular exercise by far was firing devices, followed with an easy tie for progressive hose lays, cutting fire line, fire leadership, teamwork, situational awareness, radio communications, and fire shelter deployment.

Firefighters from Plumas NF Beckwourth Ranger District and Beckwourth Volunteer Fire Department assisted with academic and field instruction. The students partici- pated in a briefing where they learned about the burn organization (burn boss, firing, holding); listened to a presenta- tion from Fire Ecologist Sara Billings; prepared containment lines; learned about and practiced with firing devices and firing techniques; observed fire activity and behavior; and learned the background on prescribed fires: burn plans, thresholds, weather, probability of ignition.

Contract Type FiledJune 10th, 2016Students from Plumas Unified School District helped Plumas NF put icing on the cake by planting native shrubs at Hallsted Campground. They planted about a hundred Pacific dogwood, Oregon grape, and Alder along a newly- installed fence. Native shrubs were chosen because of their drought-tolerant nature. Phase 2 included the installation of a drip irrigation line to aid the plants in summering through the next dry season. The plants should be well- established and hearty enough to make it through the next winter. Hallsted campground underwent a major renova- tion and sports new accessible campsites, an accessible trail, a few sites with hook-ups, new bathrooms, and show- ers. Additional future student projects/renovations include a new kiosk, interpretive signage, and possible outdoor educational/interpretive center and group camping.

You might think of this as an unlikely partnership, but Chevy has come up with a way to re-purpose the Volt battery cover. It is made of thermoset, a type of plastic that's difficult to recycle. And once the batteries are ready for use, the thermoset cases that shipped them become useless. Not any- more.

Plumas Unified School District/Plumas National Forest Storrie & Moonlight Fires Restoration Agreement:Restoration Agreement • March 11th, 2016
Contract Type FiledMarch 11th, 2016As part of on-going carnivore monitoring efforts, students from Plumas Unified School District continue as- sisting Plumas NF Wildlife Biologists. This time, they assisted in the far reaches of the Moonlight Fire Resto- ration Area. Classes helping in the effort include: Quincy HS Natural Resource and Biology Classes, Chester HS Biology Class, and Jim Beckwourth HS Science Class. The monitoring areas were established to deter- mine presence of the target species: American fisher, pacific marten, Sierra Nevada red fox, and wolverine. None were observed, but students were enthused to see what had been captured on film: black bear, spot- ted skunk, long-tailed weasel, coyote, and a red-tailed hawk. Students learned how to set up monitoring cameras, hang bait, capture data, and how a wildlife biologist determines the best location for observation (dense canopy and nearby streams).

Contract Type FiledMarch 5th, 2016Students from Plumas Unified School District continue to help Plumas NF botanists with the propagation of rare and endemic plants. Phase two of the Rich Fire Restoration Astragalus Webberi Habitat Enhancement Project continued with Greenville HS students growing the plants in the well-established school greenhouse. Students from Greenville & Chester High Schools planted over four-hundred of the rare Webber’s milkvetch. Greenville High students returned to the field in May to check the survivability and progress of the rare seedlings. About 25% of the plants survived a very dry, cold winter. Students learned that environmental conditions, terrain, and weather can have an impact on surviva- bility. But these rare and endangered plants just might have a fighting chance at continued survival due to the stu- dents’ efforts!

Contract Type FiledNovember 22nd, 2016In winter 2016, students from Plumas Unified School District Greenville High School Construction Technology Class lent helping hands to construct Spotted owl nesting boxes. The wildlife habitat restoration project was guided by forest wildlife biologists. The boxes were constructed from local incense cedar provided by Indian Valley Lumber and the fin- ished products may provide suitable nesting “condos” for the rare birds. The same students returned to help with transport and hoisting the boxes up trees to a certified tree climber who then secured the boxes. Spotted owls are cavity nesting birds and depend on large mature trees with a dense canopy cover. This project was completed in part- nership with Plumas Audubon Society. The students hope to return in a few seasons to
