Unnerving. A sharp, unexpected drop in enrollment is one of the most unnerving phenomenon in the child care business. With the changing job market, the uncertain economy, the increase in competition, and the rising expectations of parents, it is easier than ever to get caught in an enrollment void with your marketing guard down. So what do you do when you need enrollment fast, but your long-standing perceptions of how to best market your center don’t work anymore?

Early childhood educators know that a child’s values are formed before age five, yet our field has done little to teach young children how to be good stewards of the earth. We know that young children learn by watching others, yet we have rarely been environmentally conscious role models. This article discusses what early childhood practitioners can do to set a good example for children by demonstrating ways to be more in

With no intention of going into educa- tion, Lee Wagner followed his daughter to Nia House, starting there as a parent when his daughter was two years old. He worked for Far West Training Labo- ratories, visiting Head Start programs and then began substituting in the Oakland Public Schools, where he found himself focused on discipline all day. At that same time, he began volunteering at Nia House, a place where he found peace and purpose. “I was amazed by what kids are able to do and willing to do.” From volunteer he became assistant preschool teacher, then preschool teacher, as he says, “working my way down to directing.”

One of the most critical challenges fac- ing a child care director is improving staff performance. A variety of tools are available to help a director meet this challenge: in-house training, annual appraisals, workshops, conferences, col- lege classes, and training films. One of the least glamorous of these tools, pro- viding feedback, is, in fact, the most effective.

A great deal has changed since I began my first child care center over 25 years ago, ranging from the dramatic increase in the cost of doing business to the level of intense competition many of us now experience. Running a child care pro- gram has always been a delicate balance between what we would ideally like to do and what we can actually afford based upon our financial resources. But, now more than ever before, it isn’t enough to be committed to quality pro- grams for children, we must be able to harness and utilize our financial resources wisely so that our programs can continue to survive even during difficult and uncertain times.

This is why talking and reading to infants is so important. Hearing is wired during the fifth month in utero. The brain begins to wire itself for sound at that time. So literally, we can start talk- ing and reading at that point and know that we are contributing to an infant’s development of auditory discrimina- tion.

Creativity is a vital ingredient of any successful child care organization. Cre- ativity is needed in the classroom in planning a responsive curriculum, in designing a stimulating environment, and in providing exciting interactions with the children. The management of a center requires creativity in stretching scant resources, in devising fundraising strategies, and in training and motivat- ing staff. A center must be able to respond creatively to changing popula- tions, changing needs, and changing opportunities.

Communication is an elusive concept that involves a circular process of sharing one’s ideas and feelings with others and interpreting the feed- back received. In many ways, effective leadership in early childhood education is synonymous with effective communication because the success of a child care program relies so heavily on the open, honest exchange of information, ideas, and feelings. Good communication is the lubricating oil that makes all the parts of an operation run smoothly and effectively.
