Aversive stimulus definition

Aversive stimulus means an object that is used or an event or situation that occurs immediately after a target behavior in order to suppress that behavior.
Aversive stimulus means an unpleasant, intrusive, or painful stimulus that is expected to decrease a behavior when it is presented immediately and consistently as a consequence of (contingent upon) behavior. In addition, an aversive stimulus may also mean one which the individual will actively work to avoid and its contingent removal is expected to result in an increase in the target behavior. Depending upon the degree of unpleasantness and intrusiveness of the particular aversive stimulus, it will be classified as either a major or minor aversive intervention.
