Base Flood Elevation (BFE) definition

Base Flood Elevation (BFE) means a determination of the water surface elevations of the base flood as published in the Flood Insurance Study. When the BFE has not been provided in a “Special Flood Hazard Area”, it may be obtained from engineering studies available from a Federal, State, or other source using FEMA approved engineering methodologies. This elevation, when combined with the “Freeboard”, establishes the “Regulatory Flood Protection Elevation”.
Base Flood Elevation (BFE) means the elevation to which floodwater is anticipated to rise during the base flood.
Base Flood Elevation (BFE) means the water surface elevation during the base flood in relation to a specified datum. The Base Flood Elevation (BFE) is depicted on the FIRM to the nearest foot and in the FIS to the nearest .1 foot.

Examples of Base Flood Elevation (BFE) in a sentence

  • During the design phase, the Engineer worked with City staff and representatives of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to ascertain the impacts on the Base Flood Elevation (BFE) in that any development within the floodway cannot raise the BFE anywhere within the community per our adopted floodplain ordinance and the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP); this project will result in changing the BFE and as such cannot be constructed without revising the mapped floodplain within the project area.
