A passport indicating that the bearer is a British Subject, British Dependant Territories Citizen, British Overseas Territories Citizen, British Overseas Citizen, and British National (Overseas) or British Protected Person does not qualify for travel without a visa or someone who has indefinite leave to remain in the UK.
So far as the nationality requirements are concerned, under section 37 of the British Nationality Act 1981 (“the 1981 Act”), Commonwealth citizens are those who hold one of the forms of British nationality under that Act (all forms other than British Protected Person) or area citizen of one of the countries listed under Schedule 3 to the Act.
There are several types of British nationality to whom this does not apply, including British Overseas Territories Citizen, British Overseas Citizen, British Subject, British Protected Person and British National (Overseas) – although see below regarding members of the last group resident in Hong Kong.
Eligibility To apply for these scholarships, you must: • Be a citizen of or have been granted refugee status by an eligible Commonwealth country, or be a British Protected Person • Be permanently resident in an eligible Commonwealth country • Be available to start your academic studies in the UK, or remotely if required, by the start of the UK academic year in September/October 2021.
If you are a British Dependent Territories Citizen, British Overseas Citizen, British Subject, British National Overseas, or a British Protected Person, you may need a visa that is not required by British Citizens.
