Career field definition

Career field means any one of a job series or group of positions considered to have a close occupational relationship and categorized as such by the Department of State Civil Service. A career field shall include a job series, or series of jobs that were created to provide a natural progression. The career field(s) used by an agency in a layoff shall be the career field(s) in the official career field listing before the layoff plan is received by the Department of State Civil Service.

  • Career field managers will work with assignment facilitators (O-5 and below) and/or AF/REG (O-6s) and senior leadership to evaluate candidates and make assignment recommendations; input from the development team will be considered.

  • Career field managers and career field senior leaders identify key positions and provide updates annually to HQ AFRC/A1K.

  • Career field managers must be an O-6/GS-15 (or equivalent) and major command functional managers must be a CMSgt for enlisted personnel (any other grade requires a waiver by the owning Reserve functional manager).

  • Career field managers will provide detailed position descriptions, to include RegAF inputs as appropriate.

  • Career field managers will make this information available to their functional community(T-1).

  • Career field personnel should receive feedback and guidance in a deliberate and organized manner.
