Functional coating definition

Functional coating means a coating that serves a purpose beyond decoration or protection of the substrate being coated. An example of functional coatings could include a layer of light sensitive coating which helps form the photographic image on photographic film. Also, the camouflaging outercoat used by the army on its vehicles is a functional coating.
