Simon Callow has said that the odd spellings of words in The Relapse––"stap my vitals!"––were written by Vanbrugh as a reflection of the peculiar way that Colley Cibber pronounced Sir Novelty Fashion's words when he played him in Love's Last Shift (1696) (Acting in Restoration Comedy).
Cibber is often credited with writing the first English dramatic sentimental comedy, Love’s Last Shift, in 1696.
However, despite the awkward combination of styles, Love’s Last Shift was highly successful because it offered audiences the humor of the Restoration and the high moral ending they desired.Love’s Last Shift is important for several reasons: Despite the differing opinions available regarding Cibber’s motivation and intentions, he wrote a play that was popular, and it provides an early example of the sentimentalism that would dominate British literature in the later 18th century.
Cibber’s two plays are useful in the differentiation of these two genres because scholarship tends to focus on the sentimental comedy of one (Love’s Last Shift) and the political satire of the other (The Non-Juror) without necessarily addressing the presence of both modes in each play.
These included The Libertine (1675), The Lancashire Witches (1681), The Virtuous Wife, Love’s Last Shift (1696), and perhaps most famously Cibber’s The Careless Husband (1709), which turns on a husband’s repentance from infidelity after discovering the depth of his wife’s love and care for him.76 Thus when Congreve’s complete works were published in 1710, risqué sections were toned down in plays written only fifteen years before.
The resulting sentimental comedy, Love’s Last Shift, is a mixture ofsatiric Restoration comedy and sentimentalism that many find awkward.
In discussing the emotional effect of Love’s Last Shift on audiences, Bernbaum writes, “Their enthusiasm, it is important to note, was aroused by the virtues of the characters.
