The parties agree that Trustee Policy on Professional Improvement Leave shall remain in full force and effect for bargaining unit members for the life of the Agreement: Professional non-academic staff are eligible for leave for professional improvement in cases where it can be clearly demonstrated that such leave will result in specific benefit to the University.
All sworn bargaining unit members are eligible to receive Professional Improvement Leave for the purpose described in section A of this Article, if approved by the department head or designee.
Professional Improvement Leave may not be used for the purpose of attending college courses.
The Department head or designee shall develop procedures for the approval of Professional Improvement Leave.
Professional Improvement Leave is fully or partially paid leave or leave without pay for the purpose of attending conferences and courses of study which are work related.
An employee’s position will be held for the employee for a maximum of twelve (12) continuous months when the employee takes Maternity Leave, Adoption Leave, Parental Leave, Professional Improvement Leave, Leaves of Absence or any combination of these leaves.
Upon application, one (1) additional year of Professional Improvement Leave may be granted, subject to determination of benefit to the District and Board approval.
A staff member must have been a member of the faculty for at least three (3) school years prior to the granting of approval for Professional Improvement Leave.
