Purge Gas definition

Purge Gas means nitrogen, carbon dioxide, liquefied petroleum gas, or natural gas used to maintain a non-explosive mixture of gases in a flare header or provide sufficient exit velocity to prevent regressive flame travel back into the flare header.
Purge Gas means the gas introduced between a Flare header’s water seal and the Flare tip to prevent oxygen infiltration (backflow) into the Flare tip. For a Flare with no water seal, the function of Purge Gas is performed by Sweep Gas, and therefore, by definition, such a Flare has no Purge Gas.
Purge Gas means a continuous gas stream introduced into a flare header, flare stack, and/or flare tip for the pur- pose of maintaining a positive flow that prevents the formation of an ex- plosive mixture due to ambient air in- gress.
