social cohesion means a process that assists the building of shared community values. This process is characterized by the presence of strong public institutions capable of mediating social conflict equitably and of reducing inequalities of condition (wealth, income, education, health) and inequality of opportunity and generally enabling people to have a sense that they engage in a common enterprise, facing shared challenges, and belonging to the same community or democracy. It refers to the extent to which a society is coherent, united, and functional, providing an environment within which its citizens can flourish.
