Change in Pay Upon Demotion. When an employee is demoted, whether voluntarily or otherwise, the employee’s compensation shall be adjusted to the salary prescribed for the class to which the employee is demoted. The employee will be placed in a salary step in the demoted classification that is the same as or above the step held prior to demotion providing said demotion is not the result of disciplinary action. If the demotion is a result of disciplinary action, the specific salary step shall be determined by the City Manager or designee, whose decision shall be final; provided however, that if the employee had prior service in the demoted position, the employee’s step on the salary schedule for the demoted position shall not be set at a step that is lower than the step previously held by the employee in that position before the employee’s promotion.
