Crop Production and Marketed Surplus Sample Clauses

Crop Production and Marketed Surplus. Seed farmers cultivate a variety of crops in addition to seeds. In general, yields of most crops are low. Irrigated rice yields are 1864 kg/ha while rain-fed rice is about 1279 kg/ha. There is little variation between yields of GPS farmers and PSI farmers for irrigated rice. In the case of rain-fed rice, however PSI fare better with yields that are 20 percent higher (see Table 3.31). Despite their low yields, seed farmers are not subsistence farmers. In the case of rice, about half of their production is consumed on the farm, 40 percent is sold, and the rest is left as seed reserves. In the case of other crops, sales reach over 90 percent of production in vegetables and soybeans, while manioc, groundnuts, beans, potatoes, and fruit sales are between 61 and 68 percent of production (see Table 3.32).
