Gross Gamma Radiation Measurements. These measurements will be performed using NaI detectors, coupled to appropriate count rate instruments (e.g., Xxxxxx 2221, laptop computer with analysis software, etc.). For downhole in situ gross gamma measurements, the detector will be a Bicron Model G-1, a 1” x 1” NaI detector, or equivalent. In cases where the detector is expected to encounter groundwater, a watertight housing will be used. Note that since gross gamma readings are being used quantitatively, to direct the soil sampling effort, attenuation caused by the watertight housing is unlikely to impact project results. For scanning soil cores, the detector will be a Xxxxxx Measurements Model 44-9, a small area G-M detector, or equivalent. During the GWS performed in early 2000, the XXXXXX adequately detected a wide enough energy range to detect both uranium and radium. As such, for the GWS in Chartley Swamp, only the XXXXXX will be used.
