MYTH, PHILOSOPHY AND THE SPECULATIVE TASK Sample Clauses

MYTH, PHILOSOPHY AND THE SPECULATIVE TASK. In order to understand the role that allegory plays in philosophy’s narration of the whole, we must first consider the nature of this task. The term speculation (speculatio) is derived from the Latin verb specere, which means ‘to look at, to view’. In its philosophical usage, speculation is elevated to an intuitive, even visionary, mode of apprehension. The meaning of the term thus suggests not only vision as such, but an intelligent and comprehending vision.22 This intuitive yet intelligible grasp of the whole is associated with a feeling of wonder (thauma), out of which philosophy is said to emerge. One of the earliest accounts in which the connection is made between speculation as vision and philosophy is Xxxxx’s account of God’s creation of human sight in the Timaeus. As part of his “likely story” about the formation of the universe and human beings, Xxxxxxx explains that there are two causes that underlie man’s capacity of sight. The secondary or auxiliary causes deal with the physical dimension and mechanics of vision. The primary cause and higher purpose of sight, however, is described in terms that intimately connect it with philosophical inquiry: “As my account has it, our sight has indeed proved to be a source of supreme benefit to us, in that none of our present statements about the universe could ever have been made if we had never seen any stars, sun or heaven. … These pursuits have given us philosophy, a gift from the gods to the mortal race whose value neither has been nor ever will be surpassed” (47a-b).23 The power of sight thus gives rise to the power of inquiring about the nature of the universe, which in turn begets the practice and discipline of philosophy.
