Sampling Quality Control Clause Samples
Sampling Quality Control. Samples, including QC samples, will be maintained in a manner that ensures the integrity of each sample throughout its life cycle. This includes complete and accurate entry on associated sample documents and secure storage and packaging of samples prior to and during transportation to the contract laboratory facility. Samples will be packed in coolers provided by Paragon and secured by means of bubble wrap packaging to guard against movement inside the cooler. In the case of glass sample containers, each container will be individually wrapped in bubble wrap or equivalent prior to placement in the cooler. Individual chain-of-custody forms will be placed inside each cooler and will accompany each sample shipment. Most samples (i.e., samples sent for radiological analyses) do not have temperature requirements for storage, however in the case of waste profile samples sent for chemical analyses, temperature will be maintained as required by Paragon procedures by use of ice packs. Filled coolers will have any voids filled with bubble wrap or other similar filler to avoid excess movement, and will be sealed with a security seal to verify that the cooler is not opened in transit. The security seal will be covered with clear tape to ensure its integrity. Each shipment will be numbered and the shipment number, along with the numbers of the samples contained therein, will be recorded in the project’s electronic data files. Various types of field QC samples are used to check the cleanliness and effectiveness of field handling methods. Field QC samples help indicate whether project DQOs have been met by providing quantitative and qualitative measures of the data assessment parameters. They are analyzed in the laboratory as samples, and their purpose is to assess the sampling and transport procedures as possible sources of sample contamination and document overall sampling and analytical precision. Field staff may add blanks or duplicates if field circumstances are such that normal procedures are not likely to prevent or control sample contamination, or if the Senior Project Manager or the SRE believes such actions are warranted. Rigorous documentation of all field QC samples in site logbooks is mandatory. The following types of QC samples will be used as appropriate to the field methods being performed: Field blanks that are used to check the cleanliness and effectiveness of field handling methods; these are collected at a rate of one per twenty field samples.
