Waste Management o Participate in recycling using the Harvard Recycles receptacles provided. Recyclable materials include paper, cardboard, glass bottles, cans, plastics 1-7, as well as fluorescent light bulbs, batteries, chemicals, cartridges and electronics. o Designate a space for employees to leave surplus or shared office supplies to reduce redundant purchases. o Arrange for surplus furniture and other large office items to be delivered to Harvard’s Recycling and Surplus Center for reuse. Occupant Education and Engagement o Install or enable software that powers down computers when not in use, and ensure that all computer monitors have a “sleep mode” enabled. o Ensure that every employee has a power strip and turns the strip with an “off” switch for electronic devices. o Encourage staff to use task lighting that accommodates fluorescent bulbs, rather than halogen lamps. o Provide mugs or encourage staff to bring their own reusable mugs, plates, and utensils for the kitchen area. Keep the kitchen area stocked with dish cleaning supplies if a dishwasher is not available. o Start a physical or electronic bulletin board for “green tips”, news, and ideas. o Ask the Property Manager for training to properly operate controls, including shades, lights, thermostats, etc. o Advise employees to dress appropriately for the weather as building temperatures will be set at the lowest or highest end of the ASHRAE standard range depending on the outside temperature.

Waste ManagementIn accordance with the City of Tartu Waste Management Regulations, rubbish must be sorted and disposed of only in the containers prescribed for the corresponding type of waste. Unsorted rubbish can only be disposed of in the container for household waste (marked “Olmejäätmed”).
Waste ManagementGeneral waste is collected daily from classrooms, lecture theatres, teaching Laboratories, kitchens and toilets by cleaning staff. Plastic bags to dispose of large amounts of waste are available on request supplied in batches of 10 bags for a nominal charge: Black Bags – General waste Clear Bags – Recyclable waste, Please contact xxxxxxxx@xxxxxxx.xx.xx Shredding To remove any items for shredding or confidential waste please contact xxxxx@xxxxxxx.xx.xx to arrange collection and disposal Recycling The University has a green policy and endeavours to recycle as much as possible across the site. The Cleaning/Portering teams provide the following services: Paper Bins – These are for paper only. If you require more bins for your department please contact the University Sustainability team. Cardboard – This must be flattened and placed beside the general waste bins or another appropriate place. We will then remove for recycling. Bottle Bins – For plastics and cans. Please make sure that all bottles and cans are empty before disposing of. Glass – we will clear away broken glass. This will be carried out by a Cleaning Supervisor. Note: - Any recyclable waste that becomes contaminated with general waste will be sent to landfill, so please use our recycling bins correctly and help us improve our recycling rate.
