Xxxxxx Xxxx Collection Facility and General Operations. (Attachment A) During the month of April, a total 856 fish were captured at the Xxxxxx Xxxx Collection Facility; the majority (76%) of these fish were blank wire tag (BWT) winter steelhead (n=654) followed by hatchery spring Chinook (n=119). All hatchery steelhead were transported to Xxxxx River Fish Hatchery and processed by WDFW. A total 72 of 654 BWT winter steelhead captured were radio tagged and returned downstream as part of the required Adult Trap Efficiency (ATE) study. The remainder of BWT winter steelhead were transported upstream in addition to one cutthroat trout and fifty-four recaptured radio tagged steelhead. Twenty-two wild winter steelhead, five wild spring Chinook, and one hundred-nineteen hatchery spring Chinook were captured and held for brood stock collection at Xxxxxx and Speelyai Fish Hatcheries. Daily operation of the Xxxxxx Xxxx Collection Facility were suspended on Friday, April 17 through and Sunday, April 19 due to a faulty limit switch that caused some minor mechanical damage to the fish xxxxxxx and lift system. The Xxxxxx Trap was returned to service on Monday, April 20. The Auxiliary Water Supply (AWS) system, which can boost attraction flow up to 400 cfs, was operated daily. The Ladder Water Supply (LWS) was operated daily throughout the month of April. River flow below Xxxxxx Dam ranged between approximately 2,370 cfs to 6,460 cfs during April. Discharge, cubic feet per second Upstream Transport (Attachment A) To date, 1,064 (642 m: 422 f) BWT winter steelhead have been transported and released upstream of Swift Reservoir (27 of which were captured via tangle net in the lower river as part of the Hatchery and Supplementation Plan Monitoring). In addition, seven cutthroat trout exceeding thirteen inches have been transported upstream of Swift Reservoir. In addition, Xxxxxxxxx reported about 8-10 winter steelhead are continuing to be caught a day, with summer steelhead starting to show up. We are still waiting on large numbers of spring Chinook to show up. No outages are anticipated, but will continue to communicate with the ACC as they come up. Discharge, cubic feet per second Upstream Transport At total of 139 Blank Wire Tag (Attachment ABWT) To date, 1,064 (642 m: 422 f) BWT winter steelhead were transported upstream above Swift Dam in March 2016. These fish combined with an additional 18 BWTs transported earlier this winter (November – December 2016), 6 in January and 38 in February 2017, accounts for a total of 201 BWTs transported for the 2017 run year. Seventy BTWs have been transported radio tagged and released upstream of Swift Reservoir (27 of which were captured via tangle net in the lower river back downstream so far as part of the Hatchery Xxxxxx Adult Trap Efficiency (ATE) Evaluation, which began February 16, 2017. Eleven of these fish had been recaptured and Supplementation Plan Monitoring)transported upstream by the end of March. Winter Steelhead (BWTs) (thru March 2017) Male Female Total Swift Floating Surface Collector During the month of March, near 3,000 fish were collected at the Swift FSC with the majority of these fish being coho fry (Attachment A70%; n = 2,000). Except for bull trout and planted rainbows, all fishes (and life-stages) were transported downstream. The prevalence of coho fry in March is a new development this year and is likely attributed to the recent inclusion of late-coho being now transported upstream as part of recovery efforts. Surface water temperatures in Swift Reservoir remained low through the month of March and ranged typically between 4 and 5oC. Operation of the Swift FSC was suspended in early March due gear deployment and installation associated with the 2017 Collection Efficiency Evaluation, and again in mid-March on due to of high water and spill conditions. Total flow through Swift Dam (generation combined with spill) from March 18 through 21 met the requirements for lowering the fish barrier net (>17,000 cfs). Under these conditions, the FSC is turned off to prevent attracting fish to the inside of the net as well as minimizing excessive debris loading. It was noted that once WDFW reaches their adult spring Chinook broodstock needs (estimated at 1,100 adults) the remainder of the hatchery fish can be transported upstream. Coded wire tagged fish will be retained at the hatchery. All wild fish in excess of acclimation brood stock will be transported upstream.
