Your Deposit Returned as a Substitute Check. Any check drawn on another financial institution that you deposit in an account you have with us can come back to us for a nonpay- ment, fraud or other reason. When a check you deposited is sent back by another financial institution, under federal law that institu- tion may send the check back to us as a “substitute check.” A “sub- stitute check” is a paper image of the front and back of the original check that satisfies certain legal requirements. The front of a sub- stitute check states: “This is a legal copy of your check. You can use it the same way you would use the original check.” If the check you deposited is sent back to us as a substitute check, we will debit the account you have with us for the amount of the check and all service charges and costs owed to us. If the account with us is not overdrawn, we will return the substitute check to you along with a notice that explains your rights when you receive a substitute check.
