The Department of Public Expenditure and Reform has recently directed that line Departments should open negotiations with individual union groups in relation to the removal of certain allowances from current beneficiaries. This process is to be approached on a prioritised basis and will initially involve a subset of those allowances in the Education sector which, following the above Government Decision, will no longer be payable to new beneficiaries. 1.8 The estimated initial yearly saving from the removal of allowances for new entrants/beneficiaries is approximately €3M. The overall effect of the changes will see annualised savings of approximately €293M once the changes have been fully blended into the syst
