Maintained schools have a statutory duty to provide an induction process for all Newly Qualified Teachers (NQTs) during the first year of teaching (this may be extended in some circumstances). Independent schools (this includes Academies, Free Schools and British Schools Overseas) are not required to offer statutory induction to their NQTs, but if they choose to do so, must adhere to the regulations and statutory guidance. Statutory induction arrangements are the same for all categories of independent schools.
