A mechanism increasingly used for this purpose is the Service Level Agreement or SLA. A well-thought-out Service Level Agreement, or SLA, is valuable both for the service provider and for the client. The former gets the benefit of concrete demand, which allows them plan against realistic expectations, so avoiding overly expensive provision. The latter gets a reasonable, guaranteed level of service and some sensible recompense if things do not match the targets in the SLA.
