The Project “STAR! Save the Alpine Rivers!” (hereinafter “Project”) aims to protect and restore the ecologically most important river stretches in the Alps identified on the basis of a rigorous scientific study. The results of the study will be used to develop a pan‐alpine river protection strategy and a WWF action plan for river protection and restoration. The strategy and the action plan will be implemented together with WWF EALP organisations, other NGOS, and local initiatives. One important pillar of the Project is to make full use of European and Alpine legislation that aims at the maintenance and restoration of rivers and to establish close contacts with legislators and decision makers. WWF will therefore conduct intensive media and lobby work to create a political climate favourable to river protection.
