When creating CECAM ‘Centre Européen de Calcul Atomique et Moléculaire’ almost forty years ago, Carl Moser foresaw the emerging role of high performance computing (HPC) in physics and chemistry. CECAM’s early vision and pioneering coordination of the then small community of atomic and molecular practitioners paved the way for the development of modern computational tools in numerous fields that require a proper treatment of quantum and statistical features, such as nanophysics, biophysics and biochemistry, neurobiology, soft matter or material physics and chemistry.
