Central Asian Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone Treaty • July 9th, 2008

Central Asian Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone (CANWFZ) Treaty signed by five Central Asian states on September 8, 2006 in Semipalatinsk became a prominent landmark in nuclear dis- armament, especially against the background of a complete stagnation, and sometimes even a rollback in this area. Its ratification is well under way (as of May 1, 2008, it has been ratified by Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Turkmenistan) and it can be expected to enter into force in foreseeable future.
