A covenant is the deepest of agreements between two parties. In the Old Testament, God made a covenant with the nation of Israel, and in the New Testament Jesus fulfilled this covenant, establishing a New Covenant with his Church through his death and resurrection. This is a New Covenant because now not only will God keep his side of the agreement, but through the death and resurrection of Jesus, he also keeps our side of the covenant as well. Through the Holy Spirit, Jesus not only makes us “new creatures” (cf. Gal. 5:17) but “fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of his household, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone.” (cf. Eph. 2:19-20). God makes us the people of God.
