The 2D NOESY spectrum shows a clear crosspeak between the 6A signal and that appearing at 7.22 ppm. Since it is known from the X-ray structure that 6A and 6T are close to each other in space, the signal al 7.22 ppm is assigned to the 6T atom. Once 6T is known, 5T, 4T and 3T can be assigned from the interactions shown in the COSY spectrum. Theoretically a NOESY peak should appear between 3T and 3T´, but this was not observed due to overlap. The set 6A´, 5A´, 4A´, 3A´ appears much more upfield than 6A, 5A, 4A, 3A and can be assigned analogously. In this case, 6A´ is also more deshielded than 3A´.

General introduction
Doctoral Thesis • December 10th, 2008

Cells are the building blocks of life; the human body is composed of approximately 100 trillion of them. It is not an unreasonable assumption that properties of the species should be reflected in properties of their cells. Cell turnover during life history, which is essential for tissue maintenance, might be a primary mechanism of organismal ageing (Hayflick, 1985). Very recently conducted studies support a model in which ageing may results of adult stem cell dysfunction and progressive deterioration of tissue functions (Scaffidi and Misteli, 2006, 2008).

She attended George Washington High School in Denver, Colorado and graduated with an International Baccalaureate Diploma in 1999. She then studied Physics Engineering at the Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colorado where she received her B.S. In August, 2003, she joined the Master of Nanoscience program between the Delft Univer- sity of Technology and Leiden University. Two major research projects contributed to her Master thesis. The first project was at National Jewish Medical and Research Center, in Denver, Colorado, in the Department of Immunology in the group of Larry Wysocki where she developed a knock-down mouse-model to study the influence of a specific receptor in lupus disease. The second research was performed at the FOM Institute AMOLF in Amsterdam in the group of Marileen Dogterom and focused on the development of an experiment with microfabricated chambers to study the influence of motor

either bond results in the formation of four types of products. Upon A bond cleavage, apart from the leaving group 9, the Friedel-Crafts type products 10a and 10b, the nucleophilic sub- stitution products with the solvent 11 and the counter-ion 12, and the reductive dehalogena- tion products 13 are produced. Upon cleavage of bond B, also a leaving group 14 forms, next to the Friedel-Crafts products 15o, m, p, the nucleophilic substitution products, with the solvent (16), and the counter-ion (17), and the reduction products 18. One product, the ipso-substitu- tion Friedel-Crafts product 19, can be produced through either A or B bond cleavage.
