The Okanagan-Similkameen First Nations and School District No. 53 (Okanagan Similkameen) have historically worked together for the benefit of all Aboriginal students. School District No. 53, the Lower Similkameen Indian Band, the Osoyoos Indian Band, the Upper Similkameen Indian Band, and parents of students with Aboriginal ancestry have worked in partnership to develop this enhancement agreement. Furthermore, we honor the traditions of the sukənaqin* and sməlqmix* people and support their commitment to the preservation of nsíyilxcən* and culture, and further, we acknowledge the nsíyilxcən as the principle language of this territory. This enhancement agreement honors the partnership and recognizes the collective responsibility for the success of all Aboriginal learners.

ASIA Sumas is committed to helping our students develop both their academic and holistic potential by primarily by fostering meaningful relationships. From the moment our new grade 6 students enter our learning community, to when our grade 12 students are ready to leave, it is through connection that we learn our students’ stories. ASIA currently has a 100% Indigenous grad rate and we feel this is due, in part, to the opportunity we have to get to know our students during both their middle and secondary time with us. ASIA utilizes weekly care meetings specifically to better understand and support our Indigenous and vulnerable youth. These meetings include our Indigenous support worker, learning services staff, councillor, youth care worker, and administrators and through collaboration seek to gain a more complete picture of the students in our care, their needs, and how to address them. Surrey is a growing district, enrolling over 70,000 students in 125 school sites. Presently, there are over 3,200 Aboriginal learners enrolled in all but two sites. Supporting cultural connections for urban Aboriginal students is complex, given the size and variety of needs. Moving forward our Enhancement Agreement will be supported by the inquiry process to maximize the effectiveness of the work done. The inquiry process is an asset-based model that has a positive effect on the beliefs and attitudes about Aboriginal learner achievement by focusing on their strengths.
