A Housemate Agreement is a contract entered into by tenants of a residency that establishes rules and guidelines for financial and household responsibilities. A lease defines the nature of the legal relationship between the tenants and the landlord, but does not determine the relationship between the individual tenants. You may believe that you know your housemates well and that disagreements between you will not occur, but it is important to discuss basic guidelines about behaviour and responsibilities in the first few weeks of tenancy. The agreement will go a long way in forestalling future disagreements and can help you decide how to resolve an issue once it arises. Be very clear and honest about how you feel about the issues below. Communicating with your housemates is the key to a functional relationship! Attempt to make an open and trusting relationship right from the start and be sure to revise the agreement as the year progresses.
