The John Duke who purchased a tract of land from William and Ann Harrison, was the second set- tler of the Duke surname to appear in the colonial records of the region that became the Camden Dis- trict. On 23 and 24SEP1753, John Dukes transacted a lease and release agreement with William and Ann Harrison for one hundred and fifty acres "... on the North side of the Wateree River, butting and bounding to the South Eastward on the said same River and on all other sides on vacant land ..."1
