The Mayflower Compact is a written agreement composed by a consensus of the new settlers arriving at New Plymouth in November of 1620. They had traveled across the ocean on the ship Mayflower which was anchored in, what is now, Provincetown Harbor near Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The Mayflower Compact was drawn up with fair and equal laws, for the general good of the settlement and with the will of the majority. The Mayflower’s passengers knew that the New World’s earlier settlers failed due to a lack of government. They hashed out the content and eventually composed the Compact for the sake of their own survival.

The Pilgrims enjoy almost mythic status in American history. These brave refugees crossed the cold Atlantic in search of religious liberty, signed a democratic compact aboard the Mayflower, landed at Plymouth Rock, and gave us our Thanksgiving Day. As with most legends, this one contains only a core of truth. The Pilgrims were not crusaders who set out to change the world. Rather, they were humble English farmers.

The circumstances under which it was composed and agreed to and the content of the agreement make an interesting story, and one which may surprise many students. Virginia, by the way, at that time was a huge piece of property. A very generous, if unrealistic charter had granted the Virginia Company land running approximately 100 miles along the coast of present day Virginia, but then veering off inland at a 90 degree angle indefinitely.
