The Convention is named after the Japanese city, Minimata. This naming is of symbolic importance as the city w e n t t h r o u g h d e v a s t a t i n g i n c i d e n t o f m e r c u r y p o i s o n i n g . The Convention recognizes that mercury is a chemical of global concern owing to its long-range atmospheric transport, its persistence in the environment once anthropogenically introduced, its ability to bio-accumulate in ecosystems and its significant negative effects on human health and the environment.
