Parenting Contract • February 11th, 2020

Focus on strengths. When my children bring home a test, I will first praise what they did well and then I will talk about what can be improved. I will not just criticize things that were wrong.

A Parenting Contract is an opportunity for schools to build a relationship with parents and discuss issues behind low attendance working together to provide solutions and improve attendance. The process is voluntary and it is important to tell parents that it isn’t a legally binding contract and the act of signing it at the end is an opportunity for everyone at the meeting to show that they are in agreement that this was what was discussed in the meeting.

A Parenting Contract is a formal written agreement between a parent/carer and the school. It is not legally binding but allows for a more formal route to secure engagement where voluntary offers or early help plans have not supported an improvement in attendance, or have not been deemed suitable. A parenting contract is not a punitive tool. It is intended to provide support and an alternative to prosecution. Parents/carers cannot be compelled to enter into a contract and it cannot be agreed in a parent’s absence. In line with the working together to Improve school attendance guidance, a parenting contract should be considered before moving onto prosecution considerations.

Establish with the teenager, in advance, your firm insistence on a written agreement. You must be willing to state (and mean) that you will not allow the teen to drive independently until an agreement is reached, signed and followed. If possible, if two parents are involved, parents should reach an agreement about the contract before it is discussed with the teenager.
