Appeasing the Warlords:Power-Sharing Agreement • November 18th, 2008
Contract Type FiledNovember 18th, 2008Between 1989 and 2003, Liberia underwent a devastating 14-year civil war, during which nu- merous peace agreements were signed. Power-sharing was an important feature of these agreements, but the ways in which power was to be shared evolved as the series of peace agreements progressed, with increasing amounts of power being allocated to the leaders of the various warring factions over time. This resulted in the continuation of the war, as the agreements effectively encouraged interfactional fighting over territory, resources and, ulti- mately, political power.
Following discussions, this is the agreement proposed between Labour, Liberal Democrat and Green Groups to share power in the operation of the Assembly. It includes a number of positions for the Conservative Group.Power Sharing Agreement • June 8th, 2023

Buying Peace with Diamonds?Power-Sharing Agreement • November 18th, 2008
Contract Type FiledNovember 18th, 2008Power-sharing provisions were crucial in convincing rebels from the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) to sign the 1999 Lomé Peace Agreement. Although the government of Sierra Leone was reluctant to share power with the rebels, its weak military position, the war-weary population and international pressure led President Kabbah to give in to the RUF’s strong de- mands for power-sharing. However, neither the government nor the RUF abided by the terms of the agreement, and peace was only established following the agreement’s breakdown. Nonetheless, granting the RUF positions and offices in the capital Freetown through sharing of power made it easy for the government and foreign forces to control the RUF and to put them out of action when it was clear that they were not complying with agreed terms.
