Tulalip TribesSalmon Agreement • July 13th, 2023
Contract Type FiledJuly 13th, 2023Long ago, the world was not like it is today. Long ago, then, when this is how things were, the salmon people and the ʔaciɬalbixʷ [a-sikh-ta-bew—the word for “people” in Lushootseed, the language of the Tulalip Tribes] had an agreement. The salmon would come into the rivers each year and offer themselves as food for the people. The people would clean the rivers each year before the salmon arrived. When the salmon arrived, the people would go down to the shore and meet it. They would say, “Welcome noble one,” and bring him up to the longhouse, just as the ancestors long ago used to do. They would greet the salmon with a ceremony. They would put the bones of all the salmon they had eaten back into the water.
