Advancing nature conservation and stewardship in Canada requires enhanced collaboration and mutually agreed upon actions and commitments to achieve shared priorities and goals. Nature Agreements1 are a mechanism to advance these conservation and stewardship goals with interested provinces and territories, with full participation of Indigenous Peoples2. Indigenous- led conservation plays a central role in implementation of these agreements.

• The Tripartite Framework Agreement on Nature Conservation (the Framework Agreement) is an agreement between the government of Canada, the British Columbia government and the First Nations Leadership Council (FNLC), to establish a framework to achieve a more integrated and collaborative landscape-based approach to ecosystem health and biodiversity conservation.

This draft Agreement has been developed by the Parties pursuant to resolutions endorsed by the Union of BC Indian Chiefs (UBCIC), the First Nations Summit (FNS), and the BC Assembly of First Nations (BCAFN) – working together as the FNLC. Once finalized, the Agreement establishes a comprehensive framework that supports an integrated and collaborative approach to enhance and protect ecosystem health and biodiversity within BC. This approach is reflective of the shared federal and provincial goal to halt and reverse biodiversity loss, increase the resilience of landscapes in the face of climate change, and protect 30% of terrestrial areas within the province by 2030.
