Special Protection System definition

Special Protection System. “SPS”): A system that reduces or trips generation under contingency outages to maintain system stability or to limit overloads on electric system facilities.
Special Protection System means an automatic protection system designed to detect abnormal or predetermined system conditions, and take corrective actions other than and/or in addition to the isolation of faulted components to maintain system reliability. Such action may include changes in demand, generation (MW and Mvar), or system configuration to maintain system stability, acceptable voltage, or power flows. A Special Protection System does not include (a) underfrequency or undervoltage Load shedding or (b) fault conditions that must be isolated, or
Special Protection System. (SPS) shall mean an automatic protection system or remedial action scheme designed to detect abnormal or predetermined system conditions, and take corrective actions other than, and/or in addition to, the isolation of faulted components, to maintain system reliability. Such action may include changes in demand (MW and MVar), energy (MWh and MVarh), or system configuration to maintain system stability, acceptable voltage, or power flows. An SPS does not include (a) underfrequency or undervoltage load shedding, (b) fault conditions that must be isolated, (c) out-of-step relaying not designed as an integral part of an SPS, or (d) Transmission Control Devices.

More Definitions of Special Protection System

Special Protection System shall have the meanings as set forth in the ERCOT Requirements. TSP and the ISO will examine the need and feasibility of these arrangements in cooperation with the Generator. In the event that the ISO determines that such an arrangement is required, then TSP, the ISO, and Generator will cooperate to design and install the necessary facilities, and this Agreement will be amended to document such arrangement.
