Tandem definition

Tandem or “Tandem Switch” or “Tandem Office Switch” Tandem means to connect in series. A Tandem, Tandem Switch or Tandem Office Switch connects one trunk to another for the purpose of exchanging Local Traffic. It is an intermediate (Class 4) switch between an originating telephone call and the final destination of the call.
Tandem or “Tandem Switch” means a physical or logical switching entity that has billing and recording capabilities and is used to connect and switch trunk circuits between and among End Office Switches and between and among End Office Switches and carriers’ aggregation points, points of termination, or points of presence, and to provide Switched Exchange Access Services.
Tandem denotes a Class 4 switching center used to switch a call between and among two End Office Switches, an End Office Switch and an equivalent facility provided by a carrier other than a LEC, or another Tandem, or two Tandems.
