Background and Context Function. The Legal Aid Board (“the Board”) is the statutory, independent body responsible for the provision of civil legal aid (legal advice and legal representation) to persons of modest means, in accordance with the provisions of the Civil Legal Aid Act, 1995 (the “Act”). In accordance with Section 5 of the Civil Legal Aid Act, 1995 (as amended by the Civil Law (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2011) the principal functions of the Legal Aid Board are:
1. To provide, within the Board’s resources and subject to the other provisions of the Act—
(i) legal aid and advice in civil cases to persons who satisfy the requirements of the Act, and
(ii) a family mediation service;
